STAGING OF THE MUSICALE “HINILAWOD”

The Creative Futures, Inc., will present the musicale Hinilawod at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, main theatre of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on September 3 and 4, 2011 at 3 pm and 8 pm.

Hinilawod means “tales from the Halawod River.” It is one of the country’s literary treasures that was recorded in the 1950s by Dr. F. Landa Jocano, a noted Filipino anthropologist who was chanted by the mountain singers of Panay. He has written three (3) books on this epic.

This musicale tells of the adventures of the central characters like Data Paubari, the goddess Alunsina, their three (3) sons, who were known as a people with the soul of noble warriors, true strength, fearless spirit and a heart ablaze for their race.

Hinilawod is not just a literary piece but also a source of information about culture, religion and rituals of the ancient people of Sulod showing that ancient Filipinos believed in the “sacredness” of family honor, personal courage and dignity.

This folktale was first staged as a dance performance in Iloilo City in 1983. Other notable stagings followed at the World Expo in Spain in 1994, and during the 3rd ASEAN Dance Festival in Manila. In 1995, it was presented at the International Festival for Experimental Theater in Cairo, Egypt, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt and Rome. In 1998, this epic was presented in the United States of America (USA), Canada and Paris.

In 2010, the Hinilawod was staged as a musicale at the Luce Auditorium of Silliman University in Dumaguete City. More performances followed during that year.

Invited to watch the musicale are elementary pupils and secondary school students from both public and private schools nationwide as well as musicale enthusiasts.
